How losing weight can improve your health

Being obese, or even overweight, is a significant risk factor to many chronic health conditions including: type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.



If you are overweight or obese, even a small reduction in weight can have a significant, positive impact on your health.


Losing weight can help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and inflammation, all of which are risk factors for heart disease. Fat cells can also release harmful substances that can damage the heart and blood vessels. By lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol levels you will also reduce your risk of having a stroke - a leading cause of death and disability.


Research is also supporting a strong link between obesity and some forms of cancer, including breast cancer, colon cancer and endometrial cancer.


Beyond these serious health implications, losing weight can also improve your sleep quality and reduce the risk of sleep apnea - a potentially serious disorder in which breathing stops and starts. It can help reduce excess stress on your joints and muscles and subsequently reduce pain for many people. Losing weight can also increase your energy levels, especially as moving around will become easier. Finally, losing weight can positively impact self-esteem and increase a person's confidence which can significantly improve quality of life.


So what do you need to do to lose weight?


  • Reduce your calorie intake and increase your activity levels so you burn more calories than you consume each day

  • Exercise - start slowly and build up as your fitness and tolerance increases

  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night to allow your body to rest and recover

  • Control stress levels - try short meditations, yoga or even going for a walk in nature

  • Be patient. Losing weight won’t happen overnight. Be consistent with the above and you will not only see your weight come down, but your overall health improve.
